Things to do near Muttukadu and Kuvathur on ECR

Muttukadu and Kuvathur sit on East Coast Road (ECR), the coastal highway that runs south from Chennai towards Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry. Most guests come to switch off at the villa, but if you want to step out for a few hours, the stretch has more to offer than people expect.

Here are our favourite outings, grouped by the kind of trip you are on.

On the water

• Muttukadu backwaters. Where the Buckingham Canal meets the sea, the calm backwaters are popular for boating and kayaking. We can arrange a Boating Adventure as an add-on to your stay.
• Covelong (Kovalam) beach. A long beach known for surfing lessons and early-morning walks.

History and culture

• Mahabalipuram. The Shore Temple and the Pancha Rathas are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and easily the most famous stop on ECR. Go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat.
• Tiger Cave, Saluvankuppam. A rock-cut shrine by the sea, quieter than the main Mahabalipuram monuments.
• DakshinaChitra, Muttukadu. A living-heritage museum of South Indian homes, crafts and art forms. Good with children and grandparents alike.

For families with children

• Madras Crocodile Bank. A reptile conservation centre on ECR, a favourite with kids.
• The villa pool. Honestly, most children are happiest in the private pool. Our main pools are 4.5 ft deep and kids' pools, where a villa has one, 2.5 ft. Children must always be with an adult.

Planning tips

• Leave the city early. ECR traffic builds on Saturday mornings and Sunday evenings.
• Keep one day for the villa. The point of a private villa is not having to be anywhere. Book the BBQ night and let the chef handle dinner.
• Book day trips around check-in. Check-in is from 2 PM, so a morning stop at Mahabalipuram or DakshinaChitra fits neatly on arrival day.
